  • As for styles: Strictly speaking I don't really think it's soul jazz or jazz funk. It's actually very hard to define music, sort of experimental easy listening stuff, but I'll leave the definitions alone - I don't find fixing that very important. It's an album that doesn't follow the normal categories at all - at least in the context of the time of the release. There's a little of bit this and a little bit of that...mixed together, but not really strongly representing any known genres in their purest form.Experimental pop-jazz employing current pop songs in a way that's far more provocative and "weird" for ordinary pop/easy listening listeners, but I guess most jazz listeners with constipated attitude passed this on as another "easy listening shite". Kind of an Lp that's more interesting to nowaday's people with open minds not wanting to stick to traditional genre/definition pigeonholes.Anywhichway that's an interesting album and I think the beef here is the unorthodox orchestration choosing some instruments that contrast and complement each other at the same time: Bass trombone, tuba, piccolo flutes, alto flutes, flamenco guitar, 12-string guitar, electric guitars as the main melody providing instruments. There are no trumpets, saxophones or violins/strings at all. The rhythms consists of two bassists (Fender and string) and of four complete drum sets. I can hear two drum sets simultaneously and (at least) two sets of percussions. Some heavy layers of drums there. On top of that there's an extra spice added: mostly wordless chanting by Toni Wine The result is provacative and sometimes very funky, with some open drum breaks, samplers take note! A very delightful set of arrangements of songs!
